The History of Sa Possessió de Sa Bastida

Finca Sa Bastida is a historic possessió of medieval origin, located in the municipality of Sant Joan, in the heart of Es Pla, the large plain at the centre of Mallorca.

Tracing the estate’s roots back to its Islamic era, we find that its land was already given over to agriculture, complete with irrigation systems, well before the Christian conquest.

The fortified, stately structure we see today took shape following King Jaime I’s conquest in 1229, with written records confirming its existence as early as the 13th century.

The name “Bastida” has its roots in a medieval term for a fortified building, or a wooden or stone defence tower.

The estate’s stately architectural ensemble is notable for its preserved medieval and Gothic defensive features, typical of traditional Mallorcan design.

For centuries, the estate passed between various noble Mallorcan families, run according to the traditional possessió system.

Back when agriculture was driving the economy, Sa Bastida’s activity centred on olive oil production, along with the cultivation of carob, almond and cereal crops, and the rearing of sheep, cattle and pigs.

Rising up from the estate’s land is the Puig de Sant Nofre, a hill crowned by the remains of an early 15th-century hermitage (1416), where prayers were once offered for rain, and which was restored in the 19th century.

The art of tranquillity

The luxury found in the silence of stone walls and the vastness of the Sant Joan landscape.

Tradition meets modernity: We’ve preserved the original 13th-century architecture while equipping it with the very best in 21st-century comfort.

A place that gives something back: Sa Bastida is a historic estate that offers more than just a place to stay; it gives you back the time and peace that can be so hard to find.
